  • Amazingly improved

Works for a few weeks, then splats again. Consistently inconsistent. Overdue for the App Pain Doctors to substantially re-write the platform. I can't believe it; this app is consistently freezing on updates, scrolling and new issues. Is it the ads or the base coding or something else or all of it, I don't know; hard to imagine the daily for the 4th largest city in the country with a product this poor. NYT and WSJ are much better and consistently so. New iPad (Pro) greatly helped the download speed and functionality of the app. Still plenty of annoying ads popping up everywhere, but it works better. Content and writing still needs a lot of work; biases and opinion are pervasive in "news" stories. Consistently 8-10 mins to load; what a waste of time! So overstuffed with all sorts of ads (banners, pop ups, etc) and poorly programmed, that reliably slow loading and regular crashes, sometimes multiple, are too irritatingly familiar. And it's not the content, if one can ever actually get to it, is so damned enticing or well written.....makes me wonder why I continue to pay for the persistent irritation. NYT will download entire content and can be read anywhere w/o wireless access; not possible with HC.
  • Front page blank! iPad version still bad.

The Chronicle finally worked so well on the iPhone (still not on iPad even after deleting and reinstalling!!). Now the last 2 days the front page is totally blank. I deleted and reinstalled, still blank. Finally I have the other pages but still no front page. Please get them working on this again.
  • It's a joke

Worst ever. Will not load, freezes and closes at random times and often. Can’t believe they can get away with charging for a digital subscription and users have to use this junk.
  • Wish I could rate it lower

There are function news apps available so dropping this dud is a “no brainer”. The fine journalists at the Chronicle deserve a functioning platform for their stories.
  • Better

I have adjusted my review. The developer suggested deleting and reinstalling the app to make the app work and that did the trick. The app is now working smoothly. So far so good. I am hoping the app will now be stable.
  • Latest update renders the newspaper almost unreadable

I have been patient with this app, hoping the successive revisions will fix crashing and long load time issues. But, the two latest revisions have amazingly gotten worse. The app routinely freezes and crashes with even simple navigation between stories, meaning that hard restarts of the app are required to read more that a couple stories any given day. This is at best a 2007-vintage app trying to survive in 2017. It’s truly shocking and sad that a major media force like Hearst newspapers would tolerate a product this bad in the modern age and hope to compete. UPDATE: I followed the suggestion of deleting and reinstalling the app, signing back into my subscription. Indeed most of the crashing and freezing and slow load times have gone away. I give them two more stars for these really basic usability fixes, bringing the grade from an F to a C. Design issues and content age issues, as described by well by other reviews still stand though, and this is still not a cutting-edge news app yet. At least you can use it! Keep going HC app folks, you’re moving in the right direction at last.
  • Garbage

This app is garbage. I put up with its unresponsiveness for a year. Now I have decided to use Dallas Morning News app for general news and TV station apps for local news and sports. Since I wrote the above review, I found out about the Houston Chronicle e-newspaper. It is a replica of the hard copy paper and is very responsive with slick navigation. It costs only $14/mo. It is delivered in your e-mail daily about 4am. I read it on my I-pad at any Wi-Fi anywhere and am very happy with it.
  • Didn't think it could get worse

It did. Clearly an app developed by people unfamiliar with testing, quality control, usability, or a fundamental concept of programming. This app is beyond salvage. Hearst would be wise to hire a new group to develop a new app from scratch. 11/10/17 Improvements have occurred and I have raised the review to 3.
  • Freezes every time

This app is awful. It freezes on iPhone 7 virtually every time.
  • Freezes when scrolling

The app is overall unstable and often freezes when scrolling through a page. Very frustrating. I wish I could say this app used to be better, but for years it has been a bad to mediocre media experience. Therefore, I still receive an actual “paper”. If this app was better, I would switch to a paid electronic subscription which is better for everyone involved, except the delivery person.
