  • used to be awesome

Such a simple app that used to be awesome. This used to be my notebooks for classes,I was a customer since the old days, with the latest updates it has ruined it, even with the pro features, there used to be so much this app could offer that has been discarded(there were a lot of paper styles before!!!!). I even bought the pencil stylus for this app it nowadays it is a pain to use... The zooming just goes wild and the color palletee only registers my fingers, (sometimes it goes nuts)this ruins the workflow. Please update, you guys used to be awesome..
  • 4.1: a great recovery / Paper back on track

Very happy to say that 4.1 is really finally starting to work for me again. There are still some pain points tbh but more of them are ‘Why’d you hide my cheese, guys’ moments and less actual defects that would cause me not to recommend to a potential new user. And I like the looks of the new roadmap as it is expressed in the preview / promo screens I’m seeing in-app. I hope your revenue model is meeting expectations, so you can go back to pumping out high-value, low cost improvements to keep the tool fresh and widely supported, especially now that Apple’s come out with the lower-cost iPads with Pencil support. So, FiftyThree, pretty good recovery! 🤓 (see original unedited 4.0 rant I never QUITE got round to posting ...) /BEGIN 4.0 RANT/ Used Paper since the 53 Pencil days, then really kicked up a notch on iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. It has become my go-to note taking, sketching, and markup app. I’d purchased all the tools/ options etc in-app and was happy to do so, as I got so much great use out of it. Was keen to see this update until…it actually happened. Now I would give it zero stars if I could. My beef: I believe the developer (53) has profoundly crippled the app and broken faith with its (paid!) users. Specific major criticisms follow. In the release of 4.0, 53 has: 1: throttled palettes 2: removed camera access 3: removed ability to see a list of books or grids 4: removed ability to apply your own photo / customized image to the cover of sketchbooks. Now you only have access to a few color combinations There are probably others, and perhaps a few things to cheer in the free or subscription version. But I refuse to spend time looking for such ‘silver linings’ or even consider misleading the developer by giving them more of my $$ without some confidence that they are proceeding in an honorable way. Really, it’s a shame. I was a huge evangelist for Paper. Now? A hard DO NOT RECOMMEND. ps I think I’m going to start tweeting this out on Monday, along with my conjectures of WHY they went so awry. hint: google the theory of “bad profits...” Want to convince me I’m missing something important or being unfair? /END RANT/
  • Used to be a favorite art app but...

Used to be a favorite art app but one day, perhaps a year ago or so, almost all of my drawings were suddenly gone. As a freelance artist, this is something I can’t afford. I would give it 5 stars if I had all of my drawings back.

Recent improvements (selecting between pen or finger, landscape and portrait modes) are great. I love being able to take handwritten notes. I would love to see a more customizable calligraphy pen.
  • Best drawing app

Have used for years. Simply the best drawing app because it doesn’t try to give a million features. It focuses on drawing. Used to have more intuitive touch controls but is slowly making way for more conventional buttons, etc.
  • Still no backup??

Seriously, why aren’t the developers prioritizing this? Is it not possible to back up to iCloud, etc? I use this app every day, and it’s great for taking notes, but the lack of backups is making me consider switching.

I have had Paper 53 on all my devices for many years and loved it. I loved the older more user friendly version. Now I have a new iPad and noticed I was missing my tools I had already bought. So I pushed the restore button and now it says I have pro. Apparently I am paying for it now ( a subscription)and I don’t even know how much. Is it 6 months or 12 months? I would have liked to have had the choice. How can I find out how much you charged me? Restore doesn’t mean buy!

I’m literally trying to hold back tears right now! All of my ideas and work have been lost. I can’t seem to get them back! I love this app but my heart is hurting. I may move to another app.
  • Delivery leaves much (much) to be desired.

Paper app is aesthetically pleasing and good for quick sketches and notes. Seems to be it though. I don’t mind paying reasonable prices for good features but FiftyThree wants a subscription to a moderate quality app, a bad move for business in my opinion. It will only push consumers to other apps with one time fees. Especially when Paper has noticeable bugs. The Pencil is a decent stylus when tandem with Paper but once again FiftyThree would make more money by putting an effort into making it compatible with the Procreate app. Makes for a decent passive stylus anyway. Paper app has its merits but I would never dream of spending a dime on a subscription to a drawing/note taking app. It’s almost laughable. This day and age there are just too many subscription based products to warrant another. Don’t knock their stylus, use Paper for free, purchase another app for art. **Take note FiftyThree**

Love this update to an already great app. As a doodler I really enjoy using paper by 53. The new ability to size brushes is great
