  • Version 4 disappoints enough to leave Paper

I have been using Paper by FiftyThree since its initial release, to sketch ideas for creating icons or other art, but was soured by their rewrite of the app in version 4, with many necessary features omitted until they can get around to adding them to the rewritten version, and a broken workflow and UI for their copy / paste function that I would use constantly in all previous versions but now no longer want to touch. I have explained to them how this function is broken, but no fixes have been released. Fortunately, a major revision of the Concepts app, version 5, was released during this frustrating period. I had tried version 4 out but didn't catch their vision—until I spend some time learning Concepts 5. I have been hooked by 1) infinite canvas, 2) multiple layers, and 3) precision shape creation—none of which Paper has, but which I need. The learning curve for Concepts is slightly higher than for Paper, but the app is so much more useful to me, with just enough UI to cue you in to what it can do, and the ability to rearrange or minimize the UI to support what you're doing at the moment.
  • A huge improvement.

This app is amazing. I use it on the iPad (2017) and have been amazed at how smooth the animations are. I would like them to build iCloud sync into the app.
  • Crashtastic

Let me first start by saying that I love this app. However, this new version of the app has done nothing but give me the blues. This app crashes almost every 15 to 30 minutes. You can tell when it is about to crash because it starts to stutter a bit and then it is over. Don’t even think of multitasking with this new app because it will do what? Crash. There are so many issues with the copy/cut and paste functionality. Many of my diagrammed circles no longer fill with color when I tap on them. I am this close to moving over to Sketches by Tayasui because I am losing work when I have cut something and then the app crashes. When these crashes happen, I pray what I have done is still there, but often, I am not sure what I will see. Sometimes, I will see my most recent work, but other times, I will see things from a few minutes prior to the crash. I can’t count on one hand how many times I have had to write things over or draw them again after a crash. There are so many bugs ... too many to write about here. The funny thing is that I beta tested the app and didn’t see nearly as many bugs. Guys: I will take an app that functions (even MVP) over one with tons of changes (that I am not even sure were warranted) and over one that crashes every couple of minutes. I am going to start recording my screen as I work to ensure I have history of what I have done. I am quite shocked that these things were not caught by QA! I can’t believe the location change of the undo/redo buttons got through user testing! There are issues with the book covers as well as they sometimes disappear when you are flipping through and you are only left with the shadows. Sigh. I feel like I need access to your Jira instance so I can log these bugs to help us all. Please get this together guys. With the crashes, losing steps from my drawings, the fill tool not working all of the time, and not to mention we still don’t have REAL layers (saving out work to images to import as backgrounds are not layers), you are going to lose some of us that have supported you from the beginning. You had a great app that wasn’t broken and now we have an app that is riddled with issues.

  • bad plan and incomplete app 😡

This app seems to be missing all kinds of important abilities, yet they have the nerve to go the subscription route. Dark side. I REFUSE to use subscription apps even if they have a reasonable feature set for artists, which this app does not. 😡

I had the previous version of this app and it worked well. I’ve been trying to draw with the new version and while I managed to get a fair number of things sketched the last three days, the app crashed so many times and lost too much work because of the random crashes. Considering looking for a decent replacement now because of it. The previous version never crashed on me.

When I first stumbled upon Paper, I assumed it would be a lot like Notebook, or Bear. But it has a nice modern twist to it. I would recommend this app to anyone, but if you like things a little messy, then you should try Notebook, another app like Paper. But Paper still has some bugs... It continues to close unexpectedly, and asks if I want to send a anonymous report. No matter how many times I do, it still crashes! It feels like Paper is ignoring me and it makes me question my will to keep this app. Notebook never did that. When I close a notebook, the whole screen turns black, and I have to close and reopen the app. This just started happening a while ago, but it’s still annoying. Please fix this bug! I wish that I could put two text notes on one page. It kinda gets on my nerves. And I wish that I had more options for my notebooks too... Paper is a good app. It just has some bugs. But if you need a good Notebook app, Paper is the way to go! Thanks For Reading!

Getting better. After the major revision update it hangs up now and then. 4 stars when that gets fixed and sorting is re-enabled. Sorry I don’t like the in app purchases, I already purchased the product. This is the only thing preventing 5 stars.
  • Still no picture rotation after 7 updates, still crashing

Note that it was a 4-star review but things don’t change! I noticed that Paper became faster with new update, I’m using Apple Pencil on iPad Pro 12.9” 2017 and it almost feels like real paper now! That’s very cool! The main downside (apart from a crazy infinite number of visual bugs that I guess you’re fixing) is that I can’t rotate pictures anymore! I’m using the thumbnail view (instead of controversial moleskine), half of my images are vertical. In the previous version there was an option to easily rotate any image 90 degree. Now it’s disappeared! Old images are rotated but I cannot rotate the new ones, they look like they lay on their sides. Please fix it guys, I’m your paying Patron and with your minimal set of features it’s very damaging when you remove existing ones that are left!
  • Not liking New revised Paper !

The new updated paper is very odd. If you do not have the palette up then you cannot undo your previous changes. If I exit out of something I cannot go and undo a brush stroke or line. Not very clear on new implementation of program, but not happy. Ridiculous way to to find files in my opinion. It was fine sorting out the original way. It just is not an easy flowing program now.
