  • Bad customer service

I received a message stating I was reported with evidence for initialing a conversation sexually. I was only talking to a language partner and she said she didn't report me, so I asked the hello talk team please provide evidence. I got a response back stating my account was suspended and requesting me to change my nationality. I asked why and how to change my nationality, I never got a response back.

I’ve used this app for several years and my language skills have dramatically improved. I think it’s the next best thing to immersion for learning a language. It is a boundary crossing experience like travel itself.

But omg so many people who are on there for the wrong reasons! There was this Indian guy who tried to get me to do phone sex with him. Screw that! Report creeps! Don’t give your your details! Don’t give them your number to communicate on other apps, run the other way.

This app is quite amazing. I have made new friends with the language that I'm learning and hopefully will get coffee with them when I go to visit. And it's so cool that I can click on a comment and correct it! (Even though it seems like they have corrected me more than I have them.) It has really helped me more than the language apps and cds. I strongly recommend trying it. Also- How can a company control peoples actions? All these people are complaining about harassment, but they give you the option to block people. Why give them a bad review?
  • Major flaw with the app

Terrible. It was great until I could no longer send any messages. I re downloaded the app and tried to log in, but was told the user was removed for violating the community policy, etc (the message was oddly cut out and I couldn’t read the rest) But here’s the problem. I never received any warning to begin with that I was doing such a thing. Does hello talk just do autobans and not tell the user? For days I couldn’t send a message and just thought the server was down... Thinking it was an odd bug with the account, I tried to make another one with a brand new email, but I get the same message when trying to sign again. After contacting their support, I get a robotic sounding email about why I was banned?? But you didn’t even warn me! You just did it!

I’ve had this app for almost 2 years and I absolutely adore it. I’ve made a lot of foreign friends to help me learn and it’s a great source for improving your skills. But there’s one thing that’s irritating me lately. I don’t know if it’s only me or if anyone else is having this problem, but I can change/choose a profile picture. I click on the icon and it brings me to my album, but when I try to choose a picture nothing happens. It doesn’t even open. Is there something I can do to fix it? It’s updated to the newest version and I’ve even tried reinstalling it. Please instruct me on what to do. Thanks.

If you're interested in learning a new language, please take the time to download this app. It is user centric (designed to be very intuitive), safe, and rewarding! I can attest to the HelloTalk designers/developers on a personal level. When I first started using this app, I was sent treats; not to mention I was recently given a VIP status for 90 days! Please be assured that the community here is safe. If someone is getting too personal, you have the option of blocking/reporting any unwanted/unwarranted behavior! I've never had such a pleasant experience in learning a language! You will make friends! On a final note, the developers/designers/customer support team is so incredibly caring, and supportive of its community! Please join me in learning new languages, discovering new cultures, and meeting new people! Download today! You won't be disappointed!
  • A must have for language learners!

HelloTalk is probably the best language learning app you could download. I use it everyday and have learned so much Spanish because of it. One of the best features is the wall of moments (this is a feature Tandum doesn’t have as of no), which I’ve used to ask questions to the HelloTalk community about grammar, vocab, and to post advice and lessons about English. The correction feature is also great and I like how you can save the corrections people give you. In the past year I’ve visited Mexico, Spain, Peru, Chile and Argentina, and I was able to meet up with friends I met on HelloTalk while I was there! My only critique would be I wish you could make video calls without having to pay for the premium versoin (this is something you can do in Tandem). Nevertheless, I’ve literally recommended HelloTalk to anyone I’ve met trying to learn a language. It’s a must.

This is a great app but also a hot spot for terrorists. They often ask your travel plans. Where do you work/live. Don’t answer their questions. Just ask for help with your translation. Or lie to throw them off. Especially the users who complain about terrorism and immigrants-they do that to try to convince you that they are not ISIS pawns. (Like why are you complaining? I didnt even ask your opinion on this) They also enthusiastically offer to help anytime because who else has all the time and money to provide free language lessons? Oh and if you suspect them, don’t help them. We need their language to remain off, so they are at a disadvantage I used the app to learn some Czech. It came in handy. While I was visiting Prague I was approached by a younger man who pretended to be a Russian who moved to Prague several years ago. He looked Russian and spoke some cyrillic/Russian words, but sounded a little different. When I pointed that out, he said he was from Kazachstan. He didnt know any Czech at all. I then knew he was a conman who was after my identity. During conversation he asked me to add him on facebook and join a fb group, which I didnt. Later on I looked up the group-it’s full of fake “American” accounts. After our interaction I found parts of my coat unfastened, even the fur pulled off my hood. Thankfully they failed to get my phone and passport, because I put them in very safe places that I wont reveal :)
