Currently using this instead of boring flash cards. It’s “Gameified” so that keeps it interesting. They have tons of other stuff to learn besides languages

Doesn't cover a lot of territory very fast, but definitely helps you really learn words and phrases and even spellings of them thoroughly.

My words cannot suffice to describe the way I've progressed through this app. The best way to learn is always full immersion, but when it's not available, this app provides a fantastic way to prepare you for immersion. I've used it in China, Thailand, and Germany and impressed natives with the progress achieved through the app, as well as learned to read Simplified Chinese. I've tried duolingo and found it helpful as far studying the grammar, but it does not do as much as memrise for building fluency. I'd recommend Memrise to anyone who wants to venture out into the world and is willing to give 15 mins of effort each day for this goal. Applied: start studying a course at least six months prior to the intended travel. Don't overburden your learning (to avoid burnout) but do as much as to make you comfortable. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
